Revealed comparative advantage (RCA) is based on Ricardian trade theory, which posits that patterns of trade among countries are governed by their relative differences in productivity. While the metric can be used to provide a general indication and first approximation of a country's competitive export strengths, it should be noted that applied national measures which affect competitiveness such as tariffs, non-tariff measures, subsidies and others are not taken into account in the RCA metric

This dataset includes yearly information about the balance of payments of different countries published by World Bank. The balance of payments tracks an economy's transactions with other countries, consisting of the current account (goods, services, income, and transfers) and the capital and financial account (capital transfers, non-produced assets, and financial transactions). The data is avaiable in current USD and as a percentage of GDP.

It is one of the five institutions that make up the World Bank Group, along with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the International Development Association (IDA), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).

This dataset includes yearly information of Measure of Aggregate Trade Restrictions (MATR), using data from the IMF’s Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions.. MATR is an empirical measure of how restrictive official government policy is towards the international flow of goods and services. MATR is based on the IMF’s AREAER binary variables related to (i) exchange measures; (ii) arrangements for payments and receipts; (iii) imports and imports payments; (iv) exports and exports proceeds, and (v) payment and proceeds from invisible transfers and current transfers. This simplest version of MATR is the unweighted sum of up to 22 possible variables. Each subindicator is scored as 1 if a restriction is present in a particular country for a particular year, and 0 otherwise.

External Sector - Global - Measure of Aggregate Trade Restrictions (MATR)

MATR is an empirical measure of how restrictive official government policy is towards the international flow of goods and services. MATR is simple, ad hoc, plausible, quantitative, easily updated, based solely on policy-relevant measures of trade policy, and covers an unbalanced sample of about 157 countries annually between 1949 and 2020. MATR is also strongly correlated with existing measures of openness and trade policy but more comprehensive than existing measures. We use MATR to show that trade restrictions are harmful for the economy and lead to significant contractions in output.

Measure of Aggregate Trade Restrictions (MATR)

This dataset includes yearly information of the Foreign Direct Investment Regulatory Restrictiveness Index (FDI RRI) published by OECD, for multiple countries. The FDI RRI measures four types of statutory restrictions on FDI: 1) foreign equity restrictions, 2) screening and prior approval requirements, 3) rules for key personnel, and 4) other restrictions on the operation of foreign enterprises. The FDI RRI is a composite index that takes values between 0 and 1, with 1 being the most restrictive.

This dataset includes yearly information of the Digital Services Trade Restrictiveness Index (DSTRI) published by OECD, for multiple countries. The DSTRI measures cross-cutting barriers that inhibit or completely prohibit firms’ ability to supply services using electronic networks, regardless of the sector in which they operate. It includes five measures: 1) infrastructure and connectivity, 2) electronic transactions, 3) e-payment systems, 4) intellectual property rights and 5) other barriers to trade in digitally enabled services. Thus, it's a composite index that takes values between 0 and 1, where 0 indicates an open regulatory environment for digitally enabled trade and 1 indicates a completely closed regime.

Transport services covers all transport services (sea, air, land, internal waterway, space, and pipeline) performed by residents of one economy for those of another and involving the carriage of passengers, movement of goods (freight), rental of carriers with crew, and related support and auxiliary services.

There are two data concepts used. They are GVC Trade and GVC Output. Trade contains measures related to international trade. The unit of observation are exporting and importing country, sector, year and source. GVC Ouptut contains measures related to gross output of each country. The unit of observation is Country, Sector, Year and Source. Data is in millions of US Dollar.
